Tracking the St. Louis region's oligarchs and their power networks
We are a group of activists from various organizations in St. Louis. Since Mike Brown’s murder, many people in Ferguson and across St. Louis have been building a movement to create a world in which Black Lives Matter. While the focus of much of this work has been around policing, most people here acknowledge that this is not just about policing—it’s about structural racism and an economic system that is designed to generate profits for the very rich off of the backs of poor and working people. Indeed, the police are but one arm of government that enforces the status quo designed by and benefitting St. Louis’ "powers that be." This project intends to name those “powers” and show how they collaborate to perpetuate the racist, unjust status quo in St. Louis for their own benefit. We're planning to publicly release lists and maps of local oligarchs to expose the "power behind the police" and re-frame the fight here as about issues of corporate power and the economic injustice and structural racism that the oligarchs enforce. This research will also be paired with distributed actions around the region. more »
