Overseeing mayor-sponsored public charter schools The Office of Education Innovation (OEI) is dedicated to promoting and providing high-quality school options for Indianapolis students. The office is responsible for overseeing the academics, finances, and operations of mayor-sponsored public charter schools that educate more than 16,000 students across the city. Drawing from the experiences of successful charter school sponsors and the research of experts from across the country, OEI has designed a comprehensive application review and monitoring process that holds applicants to high standards. Through this process, staff closely scrutinizes charter school proposals to ensure well thought-out plans, the highest academic standards, and accessibility to all children in Indiana. Final chartering decisions are made by the Indianapolis Charter School Board, consisting of experienced local educators and community leaders.
