David S. Shapira has been the Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and President, Giant Eagle, Inc. since July 2005. Mr. Shapira served as the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Giant Eagle Inc. since February 1994 until July 2005. Mr. Shapira is responsible for the overall operations and setting the strategic vision for a retail grocery store chain of more than 200 locations in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio and West Virginia. Mr. Shapira began his career at Giant Eagle in 1971 as Vice President of store operations and was promoted to Executive Vice President in 1978 and then served as its President and Chief Executive Officer since 1980. Mr. Shapira served as the Chief Executive Officer of Phar-Mor Inc. He served as the Chairman of Carnegie Mellon University until July 1, 2009. He serves as Vice Chairman of Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. He has been a Director of EQT Corporation since May 1987. He serves as a Director of United Way Of Allegheny County, Mellon Bank N. A., Mellon Bank Corporation, and Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania. Mr. Shapira serves a Trustee of Carnegie Mellon University. Mr. Shapira serves on the boards of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, Extra Mile Education Foundation, Hillel Academy of Pittsburgh, Jewish Healthcare Foundation, National Aviary, Pittsburgh Digital Greenhouse, Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse, Pittsburgh Regional Alliance, Pittsburgh Symphony and United Jewish Federation. He served as Director of Princeton Holdings, Inc. (also known as Action Industries Inc. since 1981). Mr. Shapira served as an Independent Director of Mellon Financial Corporation since 1986. Mr. Shapira received a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Oberlin College and a Master's degree in Economics from Stanford University.
