Garrett is the founder of Expa, a startup studio that works with founders to develop and launch new products. After 10 years of designing and building consumer services, Garrett and the Expa team have identified many techniques that help create successful companies. This experience has been integrated into a platform to help founders increase their startup’s chance of success. Expa plans to focus on just a few active companies at any one time, initially around mobile applications, platforms and marketplaces. Garrett co-founded Uber.com in 2009 with Travis Kalanick, to improve the efficiency of on-demand car service. Uber has now raised over $300m of venture capital from Google Ventures, TPG Capital, Jeff Bezos & Goldman Sachs, and provides on-demand car service in over 80 cities worldwide. Garrett is also the founding CEO of StumbleUpon.com, guiding its development from inception to over 30M registered members. StumbleUpon is one of the largest discovery engine on the web, delivering over 1 Billion personalized recommendations per month. Over 75,000 advertisers have used StumbleUpon to get their content discovered. Garrett completed his Masters in Software Engineering at the University of Calgary, where he researched interfaces for collaborative systems, evolutionary algorithms and information retrieval. He is also a 2007 recipient of MIT Technology Review's TR35 award.
