After the Donetsk People's Republic declared its independence from Ukraine on 12 May 2014, Borodai was appointed as Prime Minister by the republic's Supreme Council on May 16, 2014. He is a Russian citizen. Borodai was employed by Konstantin Malofeyev in his investment fund called Marshall Capital (MarKap) as a consultant and PR-expert.
