Notes In 1639, Lion Gardiner acquired an island, then called Manchonake, full of “magnificent forests, saltwater ponds, and fresh streams,” from the Montaukett tribe. The island was “between Long Island’s North and South Forks.” Lion traded for the island in some part due to his support of the tribe in the Pequot War. In one source, he traded “a large black dog, Dutch blankets, and some gun supplies.” King Charles, in his grant to Lion, said the Gardiners will possess the land for forever and be the Lord of the Manor. This became the first English settlement in the future New York State.
