Coinbase’s chief legal officer, Brian Brooks, is leaving the crypto exchange to become the second in command at the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). Brooks has been a vocal proponent of developing a private digital currency for the U.S., writing in Fortune Magazine last year that private corporations are best suited to building a digital dollar. Prior to joining Coinbase, a cryptocurrancy exchange, in mid-2018, Brooks was EVP, general counsel and corporate secretary of Fannie Mae. Previously, he led the legal department at OneWest Bank N.A. that he helped sell to CIT Group. He joined OneWest in 2011 from O'Melveny & Myers LLP where he was managing partner of the firm's Washington, D.C. office.
