Janice Gardner

Janice Gardner was sworn in as the first Assistant Secretary for Intelligence and Analysis in September 2005. She leads a new office that is responsible for developing actionable intelligence on terrorist financing and other national security threats. She also serves as the Treasury Department's Senior Official of the Intelligence Community. In May 2004, she assumed the position of Deputy Assistant Secretary for Intelligence and Analysis. Prior to that assignment, she served as a senior intelligence liaison officer at the Treasury Department, providing intelligence support to the Secretary and Deputy Secretary. From 1999 until 2002, she served as the Deputy Director of the Foreign Broadcast Information Service, which monitors and translates foreign media throughout the world. During 1996-1999, she served as Chief of the East Asia Group in FBIS, where she managed a Headquarters component and four overseas bureaus. In 1996, she worked in the Office of the Vice President as a Special Advisor for International Affairs. She was responsible for terrorism, counternarcotics, intelligence programs, international organized crime, and Latin America. During 1995-96, she was the DCI Representative to the National Security Council, where she served as a liaison officer to the White House and Executive Assistant to the DCI in his downtown office. She also served for four months as the Executive Assistant to the DCI's Chief of Staff. Ms. Gardner has spent most of her career as an analyst and manager working on East Asia and the Middle East. She has worked on Japanese leadership issues, Japanese foreign policy, and Korean leadership. She also served as an Economic Officer in the US Embassy in Tokyo during 1990-92. From 1993 until 1995, she was Chief of the Persian Gulf Branch in the Office of Leadership Analysis. For eight months, she concurrently served as acting chief of the Arab-Israeli Branch. She graduated from Wake Forest University with a degree in history and has a master's degree in international relations from American University. She was born in Japan and grew up in Ohio.
